I (Lindsey) was at the gym when I overheard a man talking about a recent diagnosis. His empowerment was contagious. He sounded confident and grounded. He was talking about how he’d been walking five miles a day, changing his routines, and how his doctor didn’t even need to see him again for six months.

What stood out to me was his attitude and confidence in himself. It got me wondering, what was actually healing him? The actions he was taking? The medicines? Or was it something greater? Andrea and I teach and live by the principle that the power of our beliefs shapes our reality. So what if it wasn’t necessarily the work he was putting in at the gym, but his own self love and compassion?

Why Healing “Stops Working”

Most people assume healing comes down to the right diet, the right exercise, the right supplements, or the right modality. And yes—those things can help.

But what we see over and over again is this: you can do all the right things from fear, and your body won’t respond. You can do far less from self-connection, and healing accelerates.

Healing begins the moment you stop abandoning yourself.

Why We Learned to Abandon Ourselves

For many of us—especially elder millennials and healers—self-abandonment was learned early. We were taught not to complain, to figure it out, to survive. Emotional support wasn’t modeled. Rest wasn’t prioritized. Listening to your body wasn’t encouraged.

Some of us were parentified. Some of us were bullied. Some of us learned that fitting in mattered more than being authentic. So we adapted. We put our needs last, disconnected from our bodies, and shut down emotions that didn’t feel safe to feel. Over time, that disconnection became normal.

What Self-Abandonment Does to the Body

When we abandon ourselves, the body doesn’t just move on. We dissociate. We numb. We override signals. Unfelt emotions don’t disappear—they get stored. Trauma responses become chronic. The nervous system stays on high alert.

So when you finally decide to heal, it’s not just about changing habits. It’s about coming back home.

Why Healing Works When You Decide It Does

This is why people often say, “I tried everything… and then something just clicked.” That click isn’t random. It’s the moment you reclaim your power—not because someone told you what to do, and not because you were afraid of getting worse, but because something in you said, I’m choosing me.

“The things that heal us work when our power is actually in them.”

That’s why one approach sticks and another doesn’t. Healing accelerates when it feels aligned, not forced.

Healing Is Yin, Not Yang

This isn’t about pushing harder or proving strength. Healing is receptive. Relational. Safe. What doesn’t work long-term is healing fueled by fear—I can’t fail, I need to fix this, I have to prove I’m strong.

What works feels different: This feels right. I’m listening. I’m choosing myself.

Your body responds to that immediately.

When the Lesson Comes Before the Cure

We shared a story in this episode about a friend who struggled deeply with receiving. She gave endlessly and pushed away help until her body forced the lesson. Through illness, she had to learn how to receive—and when she did, her health, relationships, and life shifted.

Healing didn’t come from doing more.
It came from learning the lesson.

Tools Aren’t the Power—You Are

There are many paths to healing: medicine, supplements, therapy, nutrition, energy work. None of them are wrong. But they are tools—not the source.

“There are many methods, but only one power—and it’s within you.”

Sometimes we need a tool to help our mind believe again. That’s okay. And sometimes, we don’t need it anymore.

Reflection Questions

If you’re doing everything “right” and still not healing, ask yourself:
Where am I pushing instead of listening?
Where am I doing this from fear instead of love?
What would it look like to actually partner with my body instead of controlling it?

Quick Exercise:

Place a hand on your heart and, if it feels safe, let yourself hear this:

Body of mine, I commit to you. I choose you. From this day forward, I have your best interest at heart. We learn and grow together.

If that brought emotion up, that matters. That’s where the work begins.

Summary

Healing doesn’t stall because you’re doing it wrong.
It pauses when you’re still abandoning yourself.

The moment you choose yourself—not perfectly, not forcefully, but honestly—your body responds. And if choosing yourself still feels unsafe, that’s not a flaw. That’s the doorway.
